MTCC opens recruitment for multiple positions; one-day deadline set for several roles with negotiable salaries

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced numerous vacancies across various sectors, including project managers, technicians, and other specialized technical roles, with some positions notably having an application window of just one day. This move to hire a significant number of new staff has drawn criticism for highlighting a disconnect between the government's rhetoric and its actions, as it comes at a time when other state-owned enterprises are downsizing to reduce public expenditure.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced a large-scale recruitment drive, at a time when the government is dismissing numerous employees under the guise of "right-sizing" the civil service.

MTCC has announced a vacancy for the position of Associate Project Manager within its Construction and Dredging Division. The monthly salary for this role exceeds MVR 17,000. Interested candidates are invited to submit their applications by July 9.

Furthermore, the company has announced a recruitment drive for a large number of employees to work at designated sites, yet provided only a single day for candidates to submit their applications. According to the announcement made on July 5, interested parties were given a deadline of 16:00 on July 6 to apply.

Among the vacancies announced, the company is seeking four shuttering carpenters with a monthly salary exceeding MVR 11,000. Similarly, two bar benders are being recruited at the same salary level. These positions will be based at various project sites designated by the company.

Furthermore, the announcement seeks to recruit five welders, one plumber, and eight painters. However, the specific work sites for these positions have not been disclosed.

MTCC has also announced several additional job openings. Among these is a vacancy for an Assistant Mechanic in L. Gan, offering a monthly salary of MVR 13,900. Furthermore, the company is seeking two Senior Mechanics for the Greater Male' Area, with remuneration to be determined based on mutual agreement between both parties.

Furthermore, announcements have been made to recruit an Internal Auditor and a Senior Accounts Officer for the MTCC Sawmill. Additionally, the company is seeking a System Analyst with a monthly salary exceeding MVR 18,000.

Furthermore, announcements have been made to recruit six fiberglass technicians to work in Thilafushi, as well as an assistant mechanic for M. Dhiggaru.

The deadline to apply for these positions is July 12.

While the government claims to be working on "right-sizing" the state structure, a significant number of employees recruited to State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in the islands are being dismissed simultaneously. Conversely, it has been observed that the government continues to create new positions and recruit a large number of staff to various other entities at its discretion.

Shifau noted that while the Solih administration had already completed 90 percent of the reclamation work, the current government's failure to adhere to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report has led to the erosion of a substantial portion of the newly reclaimed land.
