First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called upon all smokers to embark on a renewed personal struggle to raise awareness and liberate themselves from tobacco addiction.

She made this appeal while speaking at a ceremony held Saturday afternoon at the Meemu Atoll Mulah School hall to commemorate World No Tobacco Day.

In her remarks, the First Lady highlighted that the national anti-tobacco campaign launched today is a significant initiative expected to yield positive, tangible results. She further expressed her hope that the campaign would place a special emphasis on the core objectives outlined in this year’s theme for World No Tobacco Day.

In this regard, she elaborated on the prevalence of smoking and the factors that encourage the habit, calling upon all Maldivians to unite in order to safeguard the nation from this significant national issue. She further urged cafe and restaurant operators to play a leading role in protecting the country from the dangerous epidemic of tobacco use. Additionally, she encouraged members of the business community to take the initiative in ensuring Maldivian society remains tobacco-free.

During the ceremony, the First Lady officially unveiled the logo for the "Anti-Tobacco Campaign: Let’s Quit Now." This five-year national initiative was first announced on World No Tobacco Day, May 31, 2024, and was formally launched today.

Furthermore, the First Lady inaugurated the live canvas painting event held to mark the occasion and signed the official pledge board. In her message, she called upon the public to say no to tobacco in order to safeguard Maldivian society.

The ceremony held to mark World No Tobacco Day also featured the announcement of the recipients of the "Health Minister’s Award for Tobacco Control Excellence," an honor bestowed upon individuals who have rendered distinguished service across various sectors of tobacco control.

Following the ceremony, the First Lady viewed the entries of a poster competition held among Mulaku School students to mark the occasion. She also took photographs with the students who achieved top rankings in the competition. Furthermore, she visited several stalls organized by students and teachers, which were designed to raise awareness regarding the dangers of tobacco use.

According to a statement released by the President's Office, the First Lady officially inaugurated the M. Mulaku Fitness and Recreation Center during her ongoing visit to Mulaku in Meemu Atoll.

State fiction exposes absolute mockery behind the great tobacco reversal

The Muizzu administration is facing sharp criticism for reversing a significant tobacco price hike originally implemented to protect public health. The government claims the price reduction follows WHO advice, a justification labeled by critics as a transparent lie to mask lost tax revenue and a flourishing black market. Opponents allege the policy shift reveals a failed fiscal strategy and potential corruption rather than a genuine concern for the well-being of Maldivian citizens.

Pres. Muizzu cures a whole country by doing absolutely nothing but tweak a tax!

The Muizzu administration is proposing a 50 percent reduction in tobacco import duties just months after implementing a significant hike intended to improve public health. Officials justify the reversal by claiming the initial tax successfully steered the population toward wellness, comparing the cut to a doctor tapering off medication for a recovering patient. Critics highlight the irony of the government declaring a total victory over tobacco-related health issues in such a short timeframe.
