Government committed to protecting younger generation from tobacco: President Muizzu
President Muizzu has stated that the government will remain vigilant against emerging threats such as nicotine pouches and AI-driven marketing campaigns targeting youth. He further emphasized that efforts to amend the legal framework for tobacco control and expand support services for those seeking to quit smoking will continue uninterrupted.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has provided assurances that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the younger generation of Maldivians from the dangers of tobacco.
He gave this assurance in a post on X on Sunday, marking World No Tobacco Day.
Renewing his commitment to intensifying efforts to protect Maldivians from the scourge of tobacco and nicotine, President Muizzu stated that the Maldives has become the first country in the world to implement a "generational ban" aimed at prohibiting e-cigarettes and fostering a tobacco-free generation. He further highlighted that these are decisive steps toward achieving this national objective.
Furthermore, President Muizzu highlighted that the government remains vigilant against the emergence of flavored nicotine pouches and the use of artificial intelligence to market tobacco products to young minds. He reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to protecting the younger generation from the scourge of tobacco addiction.
President Muizzu further stated that efforts are continuously underway to implement tobacco control measures, establish cessation clinics to assist those seeking to quit, and designate smoke-free zones, alongside the necessary legislative reforms to the existing legal framework.
In his post, he also called for collective action to build a healthier Maldives, free from the dangers of tobacco.
World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31st.
