Lack of Utilities Keeps Guesthouses Closed Despite Tourism Growth: Ihusan
MDP National Congress member Ihusan highlighted that while Muli Airport is significantly boosting tourism in Meemu Atoll, the lack of established water and sewerage systems in several islands remains a major obstacle for the industry. He noted that the suspension of these essential services has prevented numerous completed guesthouses from opening, resulting in substantial financial losses for local businesses. Consequently, he called on the government to expedite the completion of stalled water and sewerage projects to ensure the atoll's continued economic growth.

The development of Muli Airport has significantly boosted tourism across Meemu Atoll; however, the lack of water and sewerage services in several islands is severely hindering the industry's growth, according to Mohamed Ihusan, the MDP National Congress member for the constituency.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Vaudhunaama" program, Ihusan stated that the airport—the first of its kind established in Meemu Atoll during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration—has revitalized the tourism industry and paved the way for major development projects across the atoll's islands.
Ihusan noted that while tourism is flourishing across all islands in the atoll, the expansion of the industry and its businesses faces significant challenges due to the lack of essential services.
He noted that water and sewerage systems have yet to be established on several islands, adding that the lack of these essential services has stalled the commencement of guesthouse businesses in those areas.
The establishment of an airport in Meemu Atoll was a high-priority initiative under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration. Alongside this development, significant tourism projects are currently underway across the islands of our atoll, including Muli, Mulah, and Naalaafushi. These projects are progressing at a rapid pace in these locations. However, the most pressing challenge currently facing these islands is the lack of established water and sewerage systems. Numerous completed guest rooms remain vacant and cannot be brought into service simply because these essential utilities have not yet been provided.Mohamed Ihusan, the MDP National Congress member for the Mulah constituency.
Ihusan stated that a swift solution is required for the water and sewerage issues. He further urged for these projects to be expedited and completed promptly.
