Government policies should be shaped to empower Maldivians in the guesthouse industry: Faisal Naseem
Former Vice President Faisal Naseem has urged the government to shape its policies to prioritize opportunities for Maldivians within the guesthouse industry. This call comes as the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) and the Guesthouse Association of Maldives (GAM) appeal for urgent government intervention to help small and medium-sized enterprises overcome challenges posed by declining tourist arrivals. These organizations emphasize the critical need for immediate collaboration with financial institutions to implement protective measures and ensure the industry's stability.

Former Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated that the current administration's policies should be designed to empower Maldivians within the guesthouse industry.
He recently visited Maafushi in Male' Atoll, the island that has seen the most significant growth in the local guesthouse industry.
In a post following the visit, Faisal stated that Maafushi is transforming into an economic powerhouse, with its guesthouse industry now boasting hundreds of rooms.
Faisal stated that the island generates millions of dollars in annual tax revenue for the state. He highlighted Maafushi as a prime example that has proven how the guesthouse industry can drive economic growth across Maldivian islands.
Faisal stated that the government must shape its policies to facilitate business operations and create opportunities for Maldivians to excel in the guesthouse industry.
The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) and the National Hotels and Guesthouse Association of Maldives (NHGAM) have expressed grave concern over the declining number of tourist arrivals, calling for urgent government intervention to mitigate the significant impact on the national economy and the tourism industry.
This downturn poses the most significant threat to the backbone of the Maldivian tourism industry: small and medium-sized enterprises, guesthouses, and travel agents. MATATO and NHGAM have warned that if an urgent solution is not found, numerous guesthouses and travel agencies face the imminent risk of closure.
Consequently, the associations have urged the government and financial institutions to collaborate on implementing emergency relief measures to stabilize the industry.
