PNC most accepted party despite referendum result: Muizzu
Despite the President’s claims that the PNC enjoys the highest level of public support, the party has faced a string of recent electoral defeats. This is evidenced by 70 percent of voters opposing the government in the constitutional referendum, alongside further losses in city council races and various by-elections. Nevertheless, senior government officials continue to attempt to distort these facts to mask the reality of their declining popularity.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that despite the embarrassing defeat in the government's high-priority referendum, the People's National Congress (PNC) remains the most widely accepted party by the Maldivian people to date.
Speaking at a PNC rally held in Dh. Meedhoo, President Muizzu stated that since its inception, the party has garnered the highest level of public support. The President further noted that the PNC has emerged victorious in every election held since the party was established, securing more wins than any other party.
This party has emerged as the political entity with the strongest public mandate. Since its inception, the People's National Congress (PNC) has become the party most trusted by the citizens, securing the greatest number of electoral victories to date.President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
Despite the President's remarks, 70 percent of the Maldivian electorate rejected President Muizzu’s PNC in the recent referendum, which the administration had treated as a top priority. While over 148,000 voters cast their ballots against the government, the total number of votes received by the administration was even lower than the official membership count on the PNC’s own registry.

Even when looking at the local council elections, the PNC—which President Muizzu claims is the most popular party among the public—failed to secure a single mayoral seat in any of the country's cities. In addition to losing every mayoral race, the PNC also failed to secure a majority in any city council across the Maldives.
The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) suffered a humiliating defeat in the recent Hithadhoo North by-election. The seat, which the PNC had comfortably secured during the 2024 parliamentary elections, was reclaimed by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the poll held to fill the vacancy.
As the popularity of the PNC government continues to wane among the Maldivian public, many are accusing senior party officials, including President Muizzu, of attempting to deceive the people by fabricating a false narrative of widespread support.
Opposition groups assert that the results of the recent referendum, local council elections, and the Hithadhoo North by-election clearly demonstrate a decline in public support for the government. However, they noted that senior government officials continue to refuse to acknowledge this reality.
