Shareef Declines Comment on Revoked Prison Privileges for Shamaan
Government spokesperson Shareef has refused to comment on allegations that the air conditioning was removed from the cell of former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamaan Waheed and that certain privileges were revoked. Stating that information regarding individual inmates is not disclosed and that such inquiries should not be directed to the government spokesperson, he redirected further questions to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). This refusal to provide details comes despite the current administration's frequent pledges to maintain full transparency in its operations.

Government spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) has refused to comment on the matter regarding the withdrawal of certain benefits owed to former Controller of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed during his imprisonment.
RaajjeMV reached out to Shareef via WhatsApp regarding the decision to revoke certain privileges previously granted to former Controller Shamaan in prison. The inquiry highlighted that the air conditioning unit had been removed from Shamaan's cell, despite such amenities being standard for those held within the Special Protection Unit.
In response to the question, Shareef stated that he would only provide answers to inquiries of substance, dismissing the matter as non-newsworthy. He further remarked that such a question was not appropriate to be directed at the government spokesperson.
When it was pointed out that the information was provided by a Corrections officer, Shareef responded by questioning how many such rumors one would have to endure, adding that people would even start seeing such things in their dreams.
What kind of question is that? "Nothing to say about it whatsoever."Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu)
Furthermore, Shareef stated that information regarding individual prisoners would not be disclosed to the media, noting that specific protocols and standards are in place for such matters.
When it was noted that no response had been received from the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Maldives Correctional Service regarding the matter, Shareef requested that the report state their failure to provide information. He further urged that a statement be sought from the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) concerning the issue.
Shareef's remarks come as both he and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu continue to reiterate that the current administration is committed to a robust policy of transparency, ensuring all information is made public.
