Government spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef has stated that the Maldives Police Service initiated an investigation into the documentary "Aisha," published on the social media platforms of the online news outlet "Adhadhu," following a directive from the Prosecutor General's Office.
Shareef stated that there was no need to formally request an investigation into the documentary produced by Adhadhu, as the Prosecutor General’s Office had already taken the initiative to ask the police to investigate the matter.
Shareef stated that the Prosecutor General's Office has taken the initiative to formally request the police, in writing, to conduct an investigation into the matter.
Shareef noted that the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission, in addition to the Prosecutor General’s Office, has informed Adhadhu that they are also investigating the matter.
Despite Shareef's assertions, it is noteworthy that the police raid on the Adhadhu newsroom occurred on the same day President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, during a press conference, called upon relevant authorities to take action regarding the matter. Furthermore, the Media Council issued its statement on the issue only following the President’s press briefing.
