Thazmeel Abdul Samad, the former Managing Director of the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), has stated that the current administration appears to be losing its grip on power, warning that the government could slip away from them unexpectedly as its foundational stability unravels.
He made these remarks while appearing on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, where he discussed the current situation in the Maldives.
Highlighting that the sudden resignation of former Finance Minister Moosa Zameer is a matter of grave public concern, Thazmeel stated that this is a very serious issue. He further described the Maldives' financial system as having completely collapsed. Thazmeel also warned that the Maldives currently stands on the brink of an economic crisis.
Commenting on the current trajectory of the government and the state of the nation, Thazmeel stated that the unfolding situation strongly mirrors the events that transpired in neighboring Sri Lanka. He noted that Sri Lanka’s economic collapse and the subsequent downfall of its government occurred shortly after the resignation of the country's finance minister.
"The payroll was prepared and submitted to the Finance Ministry well in advance. Some companies had already sent theirs by around the 26th of last month. However, look at what happened; even as the Eid holidays concluded, salaries remained unpaid. This is the current state of the nation's finances," he said.
Thazmeel stated that the Maldives is currently facing a severe economic downturn, noting that these are challenging times that the citizens never wished to witness. He further emphasized the necessity of speaking truthfully about the country's fragile state, asserting that it is no longer possible to ignore the reality of the situation.
Stating that the country is currently in a very precarious situation, Thazmeel expressed concern that the Maldives is losing its characteristics as a sovereign state. Referring to how the citizens of Sri Lanka took a stand regarding their nation's situation, he warned that there is a risk of the Maldives heading in the same direction.
