Current government support stands at 30 percent, projected to drop to 15 percent by 2028: Thazmeel
Thazmeel Abdul Samad, the former Managing Director of MTDC, has strongly criticized the Speaker of Parliament’s assertion that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will secure a second term. Highlighting the government's poor performance in recent by-elections as evidence of declining public support, Thazmeel characterized the Speaker as a "toothless lion" lacking real influence. He further noted that, based on current political trends, the administration's popularity is expected to diminish even further ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

Thazmeel Abdul Samad, the former Managing Director of MTDC, has stated that public support for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and his administration currently stands at just 30 percent. He further predicted that this figure would plummet to 15 percent by the year 2028.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Falashurukhee" program, Tazmeel stated that no citizen would be surprised by Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla’s claim that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will become the first president in the Maldives' democratic history to be sworn in for a second term. He further noted that, similarly, no citizen would believe such a claim.
Thazmeel stated that the Speaker of the Parliament appears to be a toothless lion.
The Speaker of Parliament is a toothless lion. You are speaking of a Speaker who, despite being entrusted with one of the three branches of the state, lacked the courage to post even a simple tweet expressing his regret when his own son was dismissed from his position. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to us when he claims that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will become the first president to be sworn in for a second term in the history of Maldivian democracy. I do not believe any citizen of the Maldives would find such a statement surprising.Thazmeel Abdul Samad, the former Managing Director of MTDC
He further stated that the primary reason the public would not be surprised is that the elections held on April 4th clearly demonstrated the extent to which this government has lost popular support.
This serves as a striking example of public sentiment. The recent election provided the clearest illustration yet of the level of public frustration following a change in administration and the subsequent mid-term polls. Despite suffering a significant defeat in such a major election, they have emerged defiant. The Speaker of Parliament, the Majority Leader, and government-aligned MPs are now loudly proclaiming their renewed commitment to President Muizzu. But haven't they been standing firmly with President Muizzu all along? They claim to be steadfastly behind him now, yet they were just as firmly behind him throughout this entire period. It was while they maintained that very stance that the people ultimately rejected them.Thazmeel Abdul Samad, the former Managing Director of MTDC
Thazmeel stated that the election results clearly demonstrate that the current administration maintains the support of only 30 percent of the population. He further predicted that this figure would be halved by 2028, with public support for the government expected to dwindle to 15 percent.
Abdul Raheem stated on Thursday night that President Mohamed Muizzu is set to secure a landslide victory in the upcoming 2028 presidential election, making him the first president in the Maldives to be elected for a second term. As Abdul Raheem made these remarks amid growing speculation that Muizzu might not succeed in 2028, many have responded by sharing the results of the recent referendum on social media to counter his claims.
