MDP calls for immediate and unconditional release of Shahuzan and Leevan

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the imprisonment of two journalists from Adhadhu MV as a direct assault on press freedom. Characterizing the legal proceedings—conducted without the presence of legal counsel—as a calculated attempt to silence the media, the party demanded the immediate release of the journalists. Furthermore, the MDP called upon the international community to intervene and assist in safeguarding the democratic framework of the Maldives.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has strongly condemned the imprisonment of Adhadhu MV journalists Mohamed Shahuzan and Leevan Ali Nasir, calling for their immediate and unconditional release.

One of the journalists was imprisoned for reporting on a court order, while the other was jailed for asking a question. The MDP maintains that these actions do not constitute criminal offenses under any circumstances. The MDP further stated that since these activities are fundamental responsibilities of independent journalism, prosecuting these reporters is a direct and deliberate attack on the freedom of the press in the Maldives.

The MDP has expressed grave concern over the fact that both journalists were denied access to legal counsel and were not provided adequate time to prepare a defense. This is a direct violation of the right to a fair trial and a blatant disregard for due process. The party further noted that these arrests are part of a systematic abuse of state power intended to silence journalists and suppress scrutiny of President Muizzu’s actions.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has called on international partners to engage in urgent dialogue with the Maldivian government and deliver a clear message regarding the ongoing erosion of the country's democratic system. The party further urged relevant authorities to immediately release Mohamed Shahuzaan and Leevan Ali Nasir, while calling for the protection of press freedom and the upholding of constitutional rights.
