The Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Wednesday that two individuals in the Greater Male' Area have tested positive for measles this week.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has stated that, in accordance with standard protocols following the detection of measles cases, a case investigation is currently underway to determine the source of the infection. Furthermore, efforts are ongoing to conduct contact tracing and to administer the necessary vaccinations to those who have come into contact with the infected individuals.
According to statistics, a total of five measles cases have been reported in the Maldives so far this year. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) noted that these include two cases imported from abroad. This comes at a time when the prevalence of the disease is on the rise globally, as well as in neighboring countries.
In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared the Maldives a measles-free country. However, despite this status, several cases of the disease were subsequently detected within the Maldives in 2023.
Health experts advise that it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention if a fever is accompanied by the appearance of red rashes on the body. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) emphasized that staying vigilant regarding symptoms is a vital step in preventing the further spread of the disease.
