Rice stocks dwindle as STO imposes purchase limits at staple food warehouses!
Public concern is mounting over a rice shortage in the market following the temporary closure of State Trading Organization (STO) warehouses for inventory checks. Despite the government signing an agreement with Turkey to secure essential food supplies, the practical benefits of this deal are yet to materialize, raising significant questions regarding the nation's food security. In response to the crisis, STO has stated that regular rice distribution will resume once the inventory process is completed.

Despite the strain on STO’s rice stocks and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s assurances that staple foods would be sourced from Türkiye, there is still no practical evidence of this arrangement. Even during last year’s Ramadan, the government’s order for staples from Türkiye failed to arrive. Consequently, the staple food items distributed for free by the government were those imported from India and Sri Lanka.
President Muizzu announced the establishment of an agreement with Türkiye to end the country's reliance on a single nation for staple food imports upon his return from a state visit to China in January 2024. At the time, the President stated that arrangements had been finalized to secure a year's supply of rice, sugar, and flour from Türkiye, including an additional 10 percent buffer, noting that the agreement had already been signed. However, the current rice shortage has sparked widespread public concern regarding the nation's food security.
