Widespread bad weather expected across Maldives over the next 24 hours: MMS
MMS has attributed the current inclement weather to a developing cloud mass, forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms across several islands over the next 24 hours with wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph. As the southwest monsoon is expected to commence in May, authorities have warned of further weather deterioration and urged the public to exercise caution during travel and other outdoor activities.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has forecasted deteriorating weather conditions across the entire country over the next 24 hours.
MMS has stated that the current spell of inclement weather and widespread rainfall across the country is due to a developing cloud mass. The office further noted that while poor weather conditions are expected to persist over the next 24 hours, perceived temperatures are likely to remain high.
MMS has forecasted scattered showers across the country from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday to 10:00 a.m. Thursday, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected in some islands. The office further noted that winds are expected to prevail from the southwest and west at speeds between 3 to 13 mph, with gusts potentially reaching approximately 30 mph during showers.
MMS has stated that seas are expected to be slight to moderate, becoming rough during squalls. Wave heights are forecasted to range between 2 and 5 feet.
Furthermore, MMS stated that the southwest monsoon is expected to begin in early May. As the southwest monsoon typically brings the heaviest rainfall to the Maldives, the season generally lasts from mid-May through the end of November. The transition period between the two monsoons is often marked by severe weather conditions, frequently leading to tragic incidents.
Relevant authorities are therefore urging the public to exercise heightened caution and remain vigilant regarding the current weather conditions.
