The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has alleged that because they have refused to end their ongoing protests, individuals are being bribed to incite violence and physically assault the demonstrators.
Speaking at an MDP protest held on Sunday night, Ahmed Saleem (Maaz Saleem), a member of the party's National Council, stated that the Maldivian people do not wish to keep a leader in power who embezzles from the state budget. He further noted that the public is vocal about President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s inability to govern, adding that the citizens' demand is for the President to resign and return home.
He stated that the MDP has taken to the streets to amplify the voices of the people, in line with the sentiments expressed in the council elections and the recent referendum. However, he noted that the government is employing various tactics to suppress the protesters. Salim further alleged that the authorities are using intimidation and violence against participants in an attempt to dismantle the protest.
"Hundreds of police officers are being deployed. They are being dispatched with various tools and incentives to inflict violence upon the protesters," he said.
Saleem further stated that the MDP has no intention of backing down or being intimidated. He also noted that the police are using excessive force to control the protests.
The MDP launched these protests on April 4th. During the demonstrations, the party has been putting forward twelve key demands. These demands include calls to eradicate corruption and ensure the independence of the parliament and other state institutions.
