Former President Mohamed Nasheed has announced his decision to support Fayyaz Ismail in the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential primary and confirmed his intention to contest for the position of party chairperson.
Nasheed made the announcement during a press conference held on Sunday afternoon. Nasheed stated that matters concerning the presidential election should not be deferred until 2028, emphasizing that a decision must be reached much sooner. Furthermore, Nasheed noted that he decided to contest for the position of party chairperson because he believes he is the most capable person to lead those efforts effectively.
Nasheed has expressed his desire for Fayyaz to lead the government in implementing necessary major reforms, stating that efforts to achieve this objective are already underway. Nasheed further noted that the strategy to bring about these changes will involve both collaborative negotiations and direct action.
Journalists questioned both individuals regarding their previous assertions that opportunities should be afforded to the youth. In response, both Nasheed and Fayyaz argued that the party currently requires a leader capable of navigating its internal tensions, maintaining that Nasheed is the right person for the role.
Furthermore, Nasheed stated that he would travel to every island in the country to work toward bringing about the changes desired by the public. Nasheed also remarked that waiting until 2028 to implement these changes would be a trap for the citizens, asserting that such a delay is no longer acceptable.
