MDP government brought true relief to Male' residents: MP Abbas
Debating the proposed amendment to the Land Act, Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas credited the MDP with introducing housing and social rights to the Maldives while criticizing the current administration for questioning the legitimacy of flat recipients from the previous government. He noted that the government's failure to enforce laws stems from undue influence rather than a lack of legislation, ultimately expressing his support for the amendment.

Mohamed Abbas, the MDA Member of Parliament for the Velidhoo constituency, has stated that it was the previous MDP administration that brought genuine relief and satisfaction to the residents of Male'.
During Monday's People's Majlis sitting, the preliminary debate took place regarding an amendment to the Land Act, introduced by Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo), the Member of Parliament for North Galolhu. While debating the bill, MP Abbas stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is responsible for introducing all the fundamental rights citizens enjoy today, ranging from housing rights to the rights of single mothers.
Emphasizing that it is an undeniable fact, the member stated that it was the MDP that first introduced flat construction for housing in the Maldives. He further noted that this work was subsequently continued by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who reclaimed a lagoon to accommodate 50,000 citizens and constructed a major bridge connecting Male' and Hulhumale'.
Abbas stated that while the public voted for the PNC government to rectify the mistakes of the MDP administration, the current government’s actions have proven to be even worse. He raised serious concerns over whether the 4,000 housing units completed during the MDP administration were allocated to rightful recipients, noting that the current distribution process is highly questionable. He pointed out instances where flats were awarded to both spouses, as well as to both mothers and their children. Furthermore, Abbas highlighted that individuals who already own land and housing were among the recipients, asserting that the PNC can no longer justify its actions in light of these discrepancies.
Regardless of whether the land and plots were allocated from the sea, lagoons, or elsewhere, it was the previous administration that finalized the lists and executed the process for the residents of the Male' City area. It was the MDP government that provided genuine relief and a solution for the people of Male'. This is a reality that must be accepted. Whether it is easy to swallow or not, it is a fact that must be faced.Mohamed Abbas, the MDA Member of Parliament for the Velidhoo constituency.
The member stated that the PNC government is distributing illicit bribes today not because of a lack of legislation. He further noted that the failure to comply with or enforce the law is likewise not due to an absence of legal frameworks.
MP Abbas has expressed his support for the bill proposed by MP Kudu to amend the Land Act. The member further noted that the bill could be refined and improved through amendments during the committee stage.
