Former Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi has stated that the sudden salary increases across various government institutions ahead of elections cannot be dismissed as a mere coincidence.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Noonekey" program, Dr. Didi noted that proponents of holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day argue that such a move would strengthen the separation of powers and broaden the opportunity for parliament to hold the government accountable.
However, noting that the reality is quite different, Dr. Didi stated that significant reforms must also be introduced to the laws governing elections.
The existing electoral system in the Maldives lacks the necessary legal framework to guarantee the integrity and fairness of elections. Without upgrading electoral laws to a standard that ensures such protections, the desired outcomes for the process will remain unattainable.Former Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi
Dr. Didi stated that various government agencies have seen sudden salary increases coinciding with the elections, noting that the pay structures of several independent institutions have also undergone changes. He further remarked that these abrupt adjustments cannot be dismissed as mere coincidence.
Discussions regarding salary increases for these individuals have persisted for years without resolution. After such a long delay, I cannot say that this sudden decision is a mere coincidence; it is certainly not a coincidence.Former Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi
Dr. Didi emphasized that the Maldivian legal framework must include legislation that facilitates integrity in elections. He further stated that there must be established standards and robust regulations governing the use of state resources during election periods.
Emphasizing the importance of strengthening the Maldives' existing multi-party political system, he stated that a democratic system of good governance involving opposition parties must not be allowed to slip away. He appealed to the public, asserting that there is no choice but to vote "no" in this election to safeguard that system.
