Holding presidential and parliamentary elections separately is the most effective approach established during drafting of the Constitution: Saleem
Saleem stated that he never envisioned the Constitution being altered in a way that undermines its core principles or distorts its original essence. Highlighting that constitutional amendments are increasingly being driven by specific interests, he emphasized that holding presidential and parliamentary elections separately remains the most sound approach established during the drafting of the Constitution.

Holding presidential and parliamentary elections separately was recognized as the most effective approach during the drafting of the Constitution, stated Hoarafushi Mohamed Saleem, a prominent writer and former member of the Special Majlis.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Noonekey" program, Saleem stated that he could never have imagined the Constitution would be manipulated to this extent, with changes being brought to its core provisions. He added that had such actions been anticipated during the drafting process, more stringent safeguards and "locks" would have been incorporated into the Constitution.
"We never imagined a day like this would come, where the fundamental pillars of the Constitution would be tampered with piece by piece. Had we anticipated this, we might have ensured even more stringent safeguards were in place that day—making it far more difficult to alter such core constitutional principles so easily."Renowned author, Hoarafushi Mohamed Saleem
Saleem, who previously served as a member of the Special People’s Majlis, stated that constitutional amendments have historically been introduced on various occasions to achieve specific interests. He noted that this pattern has been observed across different administrations and asserted that the same trend is repeating itself today.
Furthermore, Saleem noted that while various arguments are being presented by both proponents and opponents of holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day, he believes the Maldivian people will weigh these perspectives with an independent mind before casting their votes.
Saleem further stated that when the Constitution was drafted, the established principle was to treat presidential and parliamentary elections as two distinct processes. He noted that this remains his personal view as well.
