President Muizzu’s Finance Minister, Moosa Zameer, has stated that Iran attacking U.S. military bases located in Arab countries to target Iran would be equivalent to Iran attacking the Maldives on the pretext that American tourists are present in the country.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office on Wednesday, Zameer stated that Iran's attacks on U.S. military bases in the Middle East are unacceptable. He further noted that President Muizzu has expressed deep concern regarding these developments.
Condemning Iran's attacks on U.S. military bases in the Middle East, Zameer likened the actions to Iran attacking the Maldives simply because American tourists are present in the country.
We are deeply concerned by Iran's attacks on Middle Eastern nations. These countries provide significant assistance to the Maldives. Given that these nations have not initiated conflict with Iran, we find Iran's aggression toward them unacceptable. This stance applies regardless of whether the actions are taken by Iran or any other nation. I find it difficult to justify. It is comparable to attacking the Maldives simply because American tourists are present here. That is how I perceive the situation, and such actions should not occur.Minister of Finance Moosa Zameer
Finance Minister Moosa Zameer further highlighted the strong diplomatic ties between the current administration and Arab nations. He noted that the United Arab Emirates recently agreed to provide flexible repayment options for a $100 million sukuk previously issued by the Maldives to the UAE.
Iran has accused the United States and Israel of utilizing American military bases located within Arab nations to launch strikes against Iranian territory. Tehran further asserted that any Arab country granting the U.S. access to its military facilities or airspace for the purpose of attacking Iran would be considered a direct participant in the conflict against the Islamic Republic.
