President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has once again announced a new deadline for the completion of land reclamation at Giravarufalhu and the subsequent handover of land plots.
In a post on X on Saturday, President Muizzu stated that the land reclamation project at Giravarufalhu is progressing daily.
Noting that the project is expected to be fully completed by April, President Muizzu stated that the survey work will be finalized in time for the land plot handover process to begin in June.
The reclamation of Giraavarufalhu, which had been stalled for a significant period, resumed on January 30, 2026. This project, initiated during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, had been left at a standstill for a long duration. Expressing concern over the delays, individuals who were allocated land plots from Giraavarufalhu had previously held protests regarding the issue.
Many have criticized President Muizzu’s administration for failing to prioritize the allocation of land plots to beneficiaries of the "Binveriya" housing scheme. Critics argue that instead of advancing these existing projects, the government is focusing its efforts on the development of Ras Malé.
Furthermore, the land use plan for Giravarufalhu has undergone multiple revisions, and several rounds of lucky draws have been conducted to determine the specific plots allocated to recipients.
President Muizzu has stated that the Giraavarufalhu land reclamation project will be completed in April, despite having previously provided numerous other deadlines for the project's conclusion.
In November 2025, during a meeting with the residents of Machangolhi, President Muizzu announced that the physical reclamation work for Giraavaru Falhu would commence in early January. He further assured that the entire project is slated for completion by the end of March.
While a total of 167.15 hectares is scheduled to be reclaimed from Giravarufalhu, MACL has commenced work on the remaining 97.15 hectares of the lagoon.
A total of 4,072 land plots across four different sizes are set to be allocated from Giraavarufalhu.
The allocation consists of 2,605 plots of 1,250 square feet, 1,213 plots of 1,650 square feet, 253 plots of 2,050 square feet, and a single plot measuring 2,450 square feet.
