President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Maldivian judiciary is not an independent institution free from outside influence.
Speaking after a motorcycle rally organized by the PNC, President Muizzu stated that efforts are underway to introduce significant national reforms through a comprehensive policy package.
To ensure national stability and completely eliminate political turmoil, he emphasized the necessity of holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day. He further stated that this move is essential to fulfilling the people's aspirations and delivering the progress and prosperity they desire.
Referring to the judiciary, President Muizzu stated that further efforts are required to transform the legal system into a more independent body, free from undue influence. He further noted that this objective could be most effectively achieved by holding the two elections on the same day, thereby facilitating the implementation of the desired comprehensive reforms.
Judicial reform is also underway. Changes have been introduced through the legal system to dismantle the existing framework that was previously designed to exert influence over the judiciary. As stated prior to taking office, the necessary steps to transform the judiciary into a more independent system, free from such interference, are being actively pursued. As part of this comprehensive reform package aimed at national improvement, a proposal has also been submitted to consult the public on holding elections on a single day. To date, numerous reforms have been implemented across the system. This includes efforts directed at national development, as well as addressing various social issues and other related matters.President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
Furthermore, President Muizzu stated that positive reforms would be introduced to the nation in the future, and that initiatives would be shaped to ensure the well-being and benefit of the citizens.
Despite President Muizzu’s remarks, several cases involving the government have been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission and the courts for investigation; however, these proceedings remain stalled.
