Fundamental Rights are Linked to Elections; We Must Not Allow These Rights to Be Infringed: MP Mauroof
MP Mauroof has characterized the proposed referendum to align presidential and parliamentary elections as a deceptive ploy by President Muizzu to extend his term in office. He argued that the government is attempting to strip citizens of their democratic powers under the guise of cost-cutting measures and urged the public to vote "no" in the referendum to safeguard their fundamental rights.

The fundamental rights of the Maldivian people are inextricably linked to elections, and no opportunity should be given to strip away these rights, stated Mauroof Zakir, the Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency.
Speaking at an MDP pickup rally on Wednesday evening, MP Mauroof urged the public to overwhelmingly reject the proposed referendum on synchronizing parliamentary and presidential elections. He characterized the move as a deceptive plot aimed at extending President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s term in office.
Emphasizing the necessity of holding elections, Member Mauroof stated that development and the fundamental rights of citizens are intrinsically linked to the electoral process. He further noted that the living standards of the Maldivian people depend on these elections, asserting that they are a vital component of a democratic system.
Every positive development and every improvement seems to coincide with an election cycle. Therefore, the narrative of consolidating or reducing the frequency of elections under the guise of cost-cutting is a deception. There are numerous other avenues available to reduce government expenditure if that were the true objective. Claiming that the ten million or so Rufiyaa required annually to hold elections is an unbearable burden is simply a pretext to mislead the public. Today, the Maldivian people recognize that these measures are not truly about fiscal responsibility. Consequently, the rhetoric has shifted; it is now being argued that avoiding frequent elections will resolve internal conflicts and disputes within families.Mauroof Zakir, Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency.
Furthermore, Member Mauroof stated that a significant portion of the public now believes electing President Muizzu was a mistake and are expressing their concerns over the matter.
Urging the public not to repeat such a mistake, MP Mauroof called on citizens to vote "no" in the referendum to align the parliamentary and presidential elections. He further appealed to the public not to allow any measures that would strip them of their electoral rights and powers, urging citizens to remain vigilant against such efforts.
