Mohamed Shamin, an activist for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has been released from custody following his arrest in connection with a protest held by the party on August 28.
Following his arrest, he was initially remanded in custody for a period of 10 days. His detention was subsequently extended for an additional three days.
The court order issued in this case stated that he was taken into custody for the safety and protection of the community.
Additional allegations against him include property damage, obstruction of justice, and obstructing a law enforcement officer.
In a video shared on social media following his release from custody, Shamin stated that the right to peaceful assembly is guaranteed by the Constitution, labeling the current administration as oppressive. He further asserted that no matter how much the government attempts to obstruct them, the MDP’s efforts will continue without hesitation.
