Highlighting the nation's heavy reliance on imports, Solih warned of inevitable surges in fuel and commodity prices, emphasizing that the administration has a responsibility to provide the public with accurate information rather than distorting the facts.

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the government must provide the public with accurate information regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He warned that misleading the people and concealing the truth would only lead to far more severe consequences and greater challenges in the future.
Speaking at a ceremony held Sunday night to launch the Male' City manifesto, the President highlighted the nation's heavy reliance on imports. He noted that the country remains entirely dependent on external sources, whether for the arrival of tourists, the supply of food, or the procurement of fuel.
President Solih stated that the most crucial priority at this time is to provide the public with accurate information and to curb the spread of misinformation. He emphasized that the government is best positioned to do this, as it holds access to all the relevant facts.
During his recent press conference, he addressed concerns regarding fuel supplies, assuring the public that there was no cause for alarm. He stated that the current storage capacity in Malé is sufficient for one month. He further noted that orders have already been placed and shipments are currently available. He stated that if a fuel tanker does not arrive in the Maldives every two weeks, STO’s storage levels would drop to a 10 to 15-day supply. He further noted that the country requires between 1.1 billion and 2 billion liters of fuel daily.
President Solih stated that the government must transparently inform the public about the potential challenges and hardships the Maldives may face as a result of this war.
The President noted that while global oil prices currently range between $92 and $95 per barrel, projections suggest they could surge to $150. President Solih further stated that a similar situation had arisen during the COVID-19 pandemic, but emphasized that the issue was successfully addressed at the time through various strategic measures.
He stated that the current administration is not engaging in such actions.
I hope to see this war come to an end as soon as possible. However, there are currently no signs of it subsiding. While tourists may continue to arrive, airfares are expected to rise.
