Former Member of Parliament for the Dhaandhoo constituency, Yauqoob Abdulla, has stated that the Elections Commission has admitted to feeling "guilty" over its failure to collaborate with political parties in raising public awareness for the upcoming referendum.
He made these remarks during an interview with "RaajjeTV" on Thursday, following a meeting between the MDP and the Elections Commission.
Yauqoob stated that although the MDP had submitted numerous concerns to the Commission, the majority of these issues remain unaddressed. As an example, he highlighted the changes made to the minimum threshold required for establishing polling stations abroad. He noted that the Commission had failed to provide a justification for this change or clarify the criteria used to reach the decision.
According to Yauqoob, rather than addressing the questions raised by the MDP, the Commission focused on reminding them of the meeting's scheduled time constraints.
Instead of providing direct answers, they continuously diverted the conversation elsewhere, repeatedly reminding us that the meeting was strictly limited to one hour.Former Member of Parliament for the Dhaandhoo constituency, Yauqoob Abdulla
Yauqoob stated that the Commission's President admitted today that the Commission has failed to engage with political parties to even a fraction of the extent required.
The President of the Elections Commission stated very clearly today that he acknowledges the commission has failed to engage with political parties to the extent required. He explicitly expressed that he feels a sense of guilt for not fulfilling these responsibilities as effectively as necessary.Former Member of Parliament for the Dhaandhoo constituency, Yauqoob Abdulla.
Yauqoob further stated that the Commission's President meets with the current President more frequently than with political parties. He added that there is evident and excessive influence over the Commission.
