Permanent solution found for fraudulent political party registrations: Zakariyya

Elections Commission member Hassan Zakariyya has stated that a permanent solution has been found for the issue of individuals being registered to political parties without their knowledge, following the implementation of new procedures allowing party enrollment through the eFaas portal.

Speaking on a program broadcast by the state media, Zakariyya noted that the most significant reform brought to the Elections Commission's collaborative efforts with political parties is the enhanced management and maintenance of the political party registries.

He stated that following reforms to the political party system, which now allow individuals to join parties through the eFaas portal, complaints regarding people being registered without their knowledge have ceased. Zakariyya further provided assurances that no citizen can now be enrolled in a political party without their consent.

Furthermore, Zakariyya noted that while individuals wishing to resign from political parties previously had to submit their requests directly to the respective party, a solution has now been facilitated through the eFaas portal.

Allegations surfaced in 2025 regarding the fraudulent enrollment of members into the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) using the Department of National Registration (DNR) database. In connection with this matter, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has admitted that membership forms were completed at the DNR, confirming that a meeting room within the premises was utilized for this purpose.

However, the police service has decided not to investigate the matter.
