President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has strongly condemned the retaliatory strikes launched by Iran against Israeli territory and U.S. military bases. Iran’s actions followed a joint offensive by Israeli and U.S. forces, targeting the Zionist state of Israel, which has been accused of carrying out a genocide against the Palestinian people.
The joint attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States commenced shortly after the end of February. These strikes resulted in the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with his wife and several members of his family. However, President Muizzu’s administration failed to condemn the attacks at the time. Furthermore, when questioned on whether he would issue a formal condemnation, President Muizzu declined to provide an answer.
However, in a sudden and contradictory statement issued on Tuesday, President Muizzu’s administration strongly condemned what it described as ongoing attacks by Iran targeting Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and other brotherly Islamic nations.
In the statement, the Maldivian government expressed its profound concern over the ongoing attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, including airports and oil production facilities across the Gulf region. The government emphasized that these actions constitute a flagrant violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions. Furthermore, the government expressed its regret over Iran’s continued strikes against Gulf nations, noting that these provocations have occurred despite no retaliatory action being taken by the targeted countries.
The Maldivian government has expressed profound concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East following the commencement of military strikes by Israel and the United States against Iran. The government strongly condemns the ongoing attacks by Israel and the United States, including a strike on a girls' school that resulted in the deaths of over 100 civilians, as well as assaults that have caused extensive damage to hospitals and oil production facilities.
The Maldivian government notes with deep concern that these actions have further escalated tensions in the Gulf region. As the ongoing instability in the area continues to hinder peace-building efforts, the Maldives calls upon all parties to implement an immediate ceasefire.
The Maldivian government has called upon the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to restore peace, stability, and security across the Middle East.
In this statement, President Muizzu’s administration initially highlighted the Iranian strikes and claimed that Iran had targeted Gulf nations. However, Iran has maintained that its attacks within those countries specifically targeted locations housing U.S. military bases, a fact corroborated by both international media reports and official statements from the Iranian government.
