The Raa Atoll Council has issued a strong condemnation of the inhumane act by the United States and Israel in attacking Iran and assassinating the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In a statement, the Raa Atoll Council expressed profound shock and sorrow upon receiving the news of the assassination of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Council stated that it condemns this inhumane act in the strongest possible terms. The statement further noted that the attack, which resulted in the martyrdom of Khamenei alongside several other high-ranking Iranian officials, is viewed as a grave crime committed in violation of international law, state sovereignty, and the fundamental principles of human dignity.
In its statement, the council emphasized that political disagreements and regional tensions do not justify extrajudicial killings or the escalation of violence that endangers the lives of innocent civilians. The statement further noted that the assassination of state leaders destabilizes global security, ignites cycles of retaliation, and obstructs opportunities for resolving conflicts through peaceful dialogue.
The statement further emphasized that as members of the Maldives' peaceful and tolerant society, the people of Raa Atoll stand firmly against all forms of terrorism, political violence, and acts of aggression targeting civilians and leaders. The statement also conveyed the sincere condolences of the residents of Raa Atoll to the government and people of Iran during this time of mourning, offering particular sympathies to the families of the deceased.
Furthermore, all parties involved in the current tensions are urged to exercise restraint, respect international norms, and resolve issues through diplomatic channels. The Council’s statement emphasized that lasting regional and global peace is built upon dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to the rule of law.
