A resolution has been submitted to the People’s Majlis urging the government to take preemptive measures to prepare for potential challenges the Maldives may face as a result of ongoing global conflicts.

The resolution was submitted to the parliament by the MP for South Galolhu constituency, Meekail Ahmed Naseem.

The resolution states that Iran has launched retaliatory attacks in response to strikes by Israel and the United States, and that the conflict in the Middle East that is now spreading to other countries in the region has been intensifying of recent. It further warns that the war could be prolonged and continue for an extended period.

Given the unfolding situation, the resolution also noted that following Iran's attack on a U.S. military base in Doha, Qatar on June 23, there are reports of air travel being suspended from destinations such as Doha and Dubai. Meekail has also highlighted in the resolution that tourism is the industry that would be most immediately affected due to the war and disruptions to international air travel.

As a result, he noted that it is likely for the Maldives to face a difficult situation where tourist arrivals decrease, leading to a decline in state revenue and a significant reduction in foreign currency earnings.

Meekail also stated that it is imperative for the government to take measures to ensure the uninterrupted import of essential items such as fuel and gas for basic services, while also guaranteeing the availability of medicines, staple foods, and infant nutrition products for the public without shortages.

Therefore, Meekail has asserted that he believes the government should inform the public whether the stocks of these items are at adequate levels or not.
