Male' City Mayor Adam Azim, who is contesting for re-election on the MDP ticket, has clarified the reality behind the government's misleading statements regarding the residents of the Sinamale' flats.
Azim made these remarks while speaking at the ceremony held to launch the MDP's Male' City manifesto.
Speaking at a recent press conference, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that relocating the residents of Sinamale' and Male' Hiya flats to new buildings remains a key presidential pledge. The President further noted that the government had to intervene with repair assistance because the Male' City Council had failed to address the maintenance of these buildings over the past two years.
Azim stated that the matter had been presented in a highly misleading manner. He noted that although the Male' City Council had previously entered into contracts to redevelop the area to modern standards, these agreements were made without completing the necessary due diligence. Azim further remarked that the inability of a contractor to provide a 5 million Rufiyaa guarantee when entering into a multi-billion Rufiyaa contract raises serious questions regarding their capability and credibility.
However, Azim noted that the contractor has failed to commence work to this day. He pledged that if the MDP secures a majority in the Male' City Council, he will ensure the project moves forward.
"Regarding the one hundred thousand Rufiyaa—this is money rightfully owed to the Male' City Council. It is a mandatory deduction from those funds. This is not a gift from the President," Azim stated.
Furthermore, highlighting key aspects of the MDP’s Male’ City manifesto, Azim noted that upon assuming leadership of the city, he initially had to operate from a very confined space. However, he emphasized that despite these constraints, efforts were made to carry out the necessary work and provide essential services to the public.
Azim stated that priority has been given to relocating the City Council’s operations to its own building, allowing the council to vacate premises currently being rented. He further noted that Male’ has not received the necessary level of attention and care to date. Azim pledged that he would ensure power remains in the hands of the people.
