Abdulla Shahid, President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has expressed concern over the lack of coastal protection for the reclaimed land intended for the Makunudhoo Airport project in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, stating that the area is currently experiencing significant erosion with sand washing back into the sea.
In a post on Facebook during his visit to Makunudhoo, Shahid stated that the Makunudhoo Airport is a vision of the MDP. He noted that the land reclamation for the project was completed in accordance with the pledge made by the MDP government during the presidential election.
However, he noted that for the past two years, the only activity in the area has been watching the reclaimed land erode back into the sea.
Shahid stated that during the parliamentary election campaign, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged that if the PNC secured a majority in Parliament, aircraft would begin landing at Makunudhoo Airport by December this year. Shahid further recalled the President’s visit to the island six months ago, during which he promised to expand the airport project and declared that his next arrival at the island would be by air.
Nothing has been accomplished beyond the initial foundation we laid. Despite making repeated pledges, not a single promise has been fulfilled.MDP Chairperson Abdulla Shahid stated.
Describing the entire airport area as being in a state of neglect and disarray, Shahid appealed to the public to vote for the MDP. He stated that the MDP is a party dedicated to development, justice, and good governance.
