The President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid, has called for urgent discussions with the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), warning that the tourism sector will bear the greatest impact of the ongoing conflict.
Shahid made these remarks while speaking at a rally held in Sh. Foakaidhoo on Thursday night, as part of his ongoing campaign tour of Shaviyani Atoll for the Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections. During his speech, Shahid asserted that those surrounding President Muizzu lack the necessary expertise to govern effectively. He called on the government to instead consult with experienced professionals to seek guidance on the best course of action to navigate the current situation.
Shahid also emphasized that the most critical priority at this time is for the government to engage in consultations with stakeholders to determine the best course of action to save the industry.
The government lacks the necessary expertise. This is why it is essential to collaborate with MATI and other industry specialists. I urge the government to act in accordance with this recommendation.Abdulla Shahid
Furthermore, Shahid clarified that his remarks were not politically motivated, but rather offered as advice because the government appears to be struggling with the proper course of action. He also noted that the government must engage with industry experts due to a lack of internal capability among those currently in power.
Shahid stated that the current administration lacks sincerity and emphasized the urgent need to consult with industry experts before the Maldives' tourism sector faces a decline. He further called on the government to act in accordance with the advice and guidance provided by these professionals.
