Despite President Muizzu’s claims that projects in 57 islands remain stalled due to local councils, recent amendments to the Decentralization Act prove these assertions to be false
Velidhoo MP Abbas has refuted President Muizzu's claim that projects in 57 islands have stalled due to opposition-led councils refusing to hand over land, labeling the statement a blatant falsehood. Citing the Decentralization Act, Abbas noted that the government possesses the legal authority to proceed with projects via Local Government Authority (LGA) approval if a council withholds permission. He further alleged that the President's remarks are a calculated attempt to spread misinformation and influence the upcoming council elections.

Member of Parliament for the Velidhoo constituency, Mohamed Abbas, has refuted President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s claims that development projects in 57 islands remain stalled due to non-cooperation from local councils aligned against the government. In response to President Muizzu’s remarks, Velidhoo MP Abbas countered on X (formerly Twitter), labeling the statements as an outright lie. He further criticized the President, stating that his propensity for dishonesty has reached extreme levels, even during the holy month of Ramadan.
Member Abbas noted that President Muizzu ascended to power by misleading the public with a "vacant chair" and a series of significant falsehoods. He further asserted that the President made false oaths and fabricated promises to secure victory in the parliamentary elections. Abbas added that even today, President Muizzu is leading efforts to win council elections by defaming island councils and leveling baseless accusations against various individuals.
Member Abbas noted that President Muizzu continues to spread falsehoods even during the holy month of Ramadan, asserting that the nation has never witnessed a leader so deceitful, dishonest, and manipulative. Abbas further advised the President to refrain from such dishonesty, urging him to respect the rights of others and seek repentance from Almighty Allah.
Furthermore, MP Abbas shared the recent amendment to the Decentralization Act on X. He stated that the amendment serves as proof that President Muizzu is being untruthful.
Under the amendment introduced during President Muizzu’s administration, the government is empowered to proceed with development projects and activities in administrative divisions if local councils fail to grant the necessary permits within a reasonable timeframe. In such instances, the government may move forward with these initiatives upon obtaining authorization from the Local Government Authority (LGA).
