Investigating President Waheed is a responsibility President Muizzu must fulfill: Reeko Moosa
The U.S. Department of Justice has released a significant cache of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, revealing extensive communications that have prompted calls for an investigation into former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed. The documents indicate that during his presidency, Dr. Waheed personally exchanged emails and consulted with Epstein on various matters concerning state governance.

Former Chairperson of the MDP, Moosa Manik (Reeko Moosa), has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu must initiate an investigation into former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik.
Moosa made these remarks following the U.S. Department of Justice's release of millions of new files related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, in which the name of former Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik appears multiple times.
In a post on X, it was alleged that while Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik held the oath of the Vice President—a position established under Article 115 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives—and subsequently the oath of the President, he sought governance advice from a foreign national. This occurred despite the constitutional provision under Article 115 for a Cabinet of Ministers to consult on domestic and foreign policy, as well as an Attorney General for legal counsel. The post further claimed that advice on state affairs was instead sought from an individual like "Epstein," a foreign national associated with the sexual abuse of minors and same-sex misconduct.
Furthermore, following the release of documents by the U.S. State Department suggesting discussions were held regarding numerous actions inappropriate for a Head of State, it is believed that President Dr. Muizzu must initiate an investigation into former President Mohamed Waheed. Such an inquiry should mirror the ongoing investigations into certain British political figures identified in the Epstein files.
The information released last Friday includes three million pages of documents, 180,000 photographs, and 2,000 videos. These materials were made public six weeks after the deadline stipulated in the legislation signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, which mandated the disclosure of all records related to Epstein.
Documents released by the U.S. government reveal that former President Dr. Waheed, who currently serves as a Special Envoy for President Dr. Muizzu, maintained a close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, as evidenced by numerous email exchanges between the two parties.
It is also noted that through the close relationship established between Epstein and Dr. Waheed, communications took place between the three parties, in which Waheed introduced his son, Jeffrey Salim, to Epstein.
It is noted that the emails sent by Dr. Waheed to Epstein were sent personally during his presidency, without the involvement of any intermediaries.
