MDP to hold congress following Local Council Elections

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s National Congress has decided to hold its extraordinary congress after the Local Council Elections scheduled for 2026.
The decision was reached during the MDP National Congress meeting held on Wednesday. It was the 25th session of the fourth term of the party's National Congress.
At Wednesday’s meeting, it was passed that the party's congress would be held in mid-2026, after the Local Council Elections.
MDP initially decided to hold the congress before 15 August 2026. This was decided at the 22nd meeting of the fourth term of MDP's National Congress. However, the date has since been changed, and it has been passed to hold the congress next year.
The proposal, submitted by Ahmed Saleem, President of the Hoarafushi constituency, and seconded by Abdulla Siraj, President of the Thulhaadhoo constituency, and Moosa Ali Manik, President of the Maduvvari constituency, was passed with the support of 45 out of 47 members present at the meeting.
The main opposition party is preparing for what is expected to be one of the most significant political events of the coming year, its national congress. The party has announced plans to introduce major amendments to its constitution during the gathering.
As the largest and most popular political party in the Maldives, MDP’s congress is anticipated to shape the future direction of the party and the broader political landscape.
