While the government has been working to strengthen the role of women and towards achieving gender equality, the president assured that the government will do everything required to empower women.

Noting that the pay of WDC members are relatively low, the president revealed plans to double their salaries.

The allowance of WDC members, as of now, is MVR 2500, with the head of the committee receiving MVR 3000.

Taking into consideration, President Solih’s recent announcement of the salary increase, the allowance will now be MVR 5000, the head of committee receiving 6000.

The incumbent administration has consistently supported the councils, and actively facilitated the functioning of WDC.

President Solih is currently on a seven-island official tour of Thaa, or Kolhumadulu atoll. He first visited Thimarafushi island, where he met with the island's council and WDC members, as well as businessmen and fishermen on the island.
