President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially restructured the administrative divisions of Addu City, separating Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo from the Addu City Council and establishing them as independent island councils.
The announcement was published on the President’s Office website late Monday. According to the update, Addu City Council will now comprise Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo and Feydhoo, while Meedhoo and Hulhudhoo have been designated as distinct administrative islands.
The change was enacted through Presidential Decree No. 33/2025, which amends Decree No. 2/2025 on the designation of inhabited islands in the Maldives. The amendment was also published in the Government Gazette on Monday.
Under the revised structure, “Addu City” retains its city status with a dedicated Addu City Council overseeing its affairs. Separate councils have been established for the two newly designated islands, Addu Atoll/S. Addu Meedhoo Council and Addu Atoll/S. Addu Hulhudhoo Council, to manage their local governance.
The new administrative arrangements will take effect with the next Local Council Elections. Members of the restructured Addu City Council, as well as the new Meedhoo and Hulhudhoo councils, will be elected in accordance with existing laws.
