While Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo have chosen to break away from Addu City Council, residents of Feydhoo have rejected separation and are celebrating their decision to remain part of the city’s administration.
With all ballot boxes counted, results confirm that Feydhoo will continue under Addu City Council, maintaining the current administrative structure. In contrast, Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, physically detached from the connected islands of Addu, voted to establish independent councils for their respective islands.
In Feydhoo, 1,782 residents voted against separation, while 615 voted in favor, out of 4,368 eligible voters. With a total population of 5,810, the result reflects a decisive rejection of efforts to divide the city’s governance.
Despite the government claiming neutrality on the issue, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan and Feydhoo’s two lawmakers in parliament, Ibrahim Didi (IB) and Ismail Nizar, actively campaigned for separation. Their position was ultimately rejected by the majority of Feydhoo residents, who viewed continued unity under Addu City as the better path forward.
As the results were announced, celebrations broke out across Feydhoo, marking a clear message from its residents that they prefer stability and continuity over political fragmentation.
