The High Commission of India in the Maldives has called on Indian citizens working in the Maldives to urge their employers to pay salaries in U.S. Dollars.

The High Commission made this statement in a press release expressing concern over the State Bank of India's Maldives branch reducing the remittance limit for Indian citizens working in the Maldives from USD 400 to USD 150, effective from October 25.

In a message sent to account holders, the State Bank of India stated that this adjustment was necessary due to the scarcity of U.S. Dollars.

Recognizing the seriousness of this issue, the High Commission said in the statement that they are working with the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maldives Monetary Authority, and other relevant agencies, as well as concerned Indian authorities, to address the challenges in remittances. The High Commission also stated that they had discussions with relevant Maldivian government authorities this week to find solutions to this issue.

The High Commission has urged citizens working in the Maldives to plan their remittances in advance due to this difficulty and to encourage their employers to pay salaries in U.S. Dollars.

The statement acknowledges the difficulties faced by Indian citizens living in the Maldives and their families in India due to this situation.
