The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has held an event titled "Anhenunge Adu", translated as "Women’s Voice", in the capital Malé City on Tuesday evening, as part of the buildup to a large-scale rally scheduled for October 3.
Held at Artificial Beach, the event aimed to mobilize public support and encourage participation in the upcoming rally, which the party describes as a major demonstration against the current administration.
During the event, women displayed placards bearing promises made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, taking to the streets of Malé City to remind the government of these unfulfilled commitments. The activity served as both a symbolic protest and a public outreach effort to highlight dissatisfaction with the government’s performance.
Several senior MDP figures took part in the event, including former members of the People’s Majlis and key party leaders. Throughout the gathering, participants expressed concern over a range of issues, including the rising cost of living, inflation, healthcare challenges, increased utility bills, and the weakening value of the Maldivian Rufiyaa.
Participants also raised alarms over what they described as attempts by the government to amend the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and introduce legal changes that could undermine fundamental rights and freedoms.
As part of the event, a specially produced song for the upcoming rally was broadcast across the main streets of Malé City, with the goal of drawing maximum public participation for the October 3 gathering.
MDP’s latest activity reflects the party’s broader campaign strategy to challenge the current administration's policies and hold it accountable for its governance.
