The Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, in collaboration with the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), has announced plans to host the Palestinian U-17 national football team for a training camp in the Maldives this November.
The Palestine Football Association had formally requested FAM’s assistance in organizing two friendly matches between their U-17 team, which is set to compete in the upcoming AFC Asian Cup, and the Maldives U-17 team, along with arrangements for a training camp.
In response, the FAM Executive Committee, during a meeting held last Sunday, agreed to seek government support to cover accommodation and logistical arrangements for the team’s stay from November 8 to 18. The committee also approved efforts to secure sponsorship for the two scheduled friendly matches.
Following this, Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu met with FAM President Ahmed Thoriq (Tom ) on Tuesday to finalize plans. The ministry later confirmed that the government has agreed to host the Palestinian youth team, emphasizing that the initiative reflects the Maldives' commitment to supporting Palestinian athletes during a difficult time.
The ministry highlighted that this move would further strengthen bilateral ties between the Maldives and Palestine, while also providing much-needed assistance to a nation facing severe disruptions in sports activities due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
With sports infrastructure in Palestine heavily affected by the genocide, its national teams have been forced to hold training camps and competitive matches abroad. This support from the Maldives provides a vital lifeline for the young Palestinian athletes as they prepare for international competition.
