After a long hiatus, top-tier football is finally back in the Maldives as the Dhivehi Premier League (DPL) is set to kick off this Thursday with an exciting opener between reigning champions Maziya Sports and Recreation and Club Eagles.
The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has officially released the league schedule, marking the return of one of the country's most anticipated football tournaments. The opening match promises fireworks as Maziya look to begin their title defense on the front foot, while Eagles will be keen to make an early statement.
Friday’s action will feature two highly anticipated fixtures. First up, TC Sports Club will take on New Radiant Sports Club in a match that carries historical weight, as New Radiant is back in the first division after years away from top-flight football. Their return comes after Super United Sports (SUS) withdrew from the competition, opening the door for the legendary club's comeback.
Later that night, Buru Sports Club will face off against Victory Sports Club. Victory, who earned their spot in the top division by reaching the final of the most recent Second Division tournament, narrowly avoided suspension and will be looking to prove they belong among the elite.
The action continues on Saturday evening as United Victory takes on Odi Sports Club. This marks Odi’s debut in the first division, having secured their place by winning the most recent Second Division tournament.
The final match before the short break sees Club Green Streets face off against Club Valencia on Saturday night. With both clubs having strong histories in the league, this fixture is expected to be fiercely contested.
After the opening five matches, the league will take a three-day break, resuming on September 24.
The last edition of DPL wrapped up at the end of 2023, and the competition has been on hold ever since. This year’s kickoff marks the end of a long wait, following months of uncertainty and behind-the-scenes effort to bring the league back.
