The Chief Justice of the Maldives, Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, has retired from his position abruptly.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, a reliable source confirmed that the Chief Justice had planned to retire towards the end of this year, but he decided to retire on Thursday and sent a letter to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) informing them of his decision.
It remains unconfirmed whether the JSC has forwarded the letter to the President's Office, and the JSC has yet to respond to the letter.
Chief Justice Muthasim has decided to retire at a time the government is working tirelessly to dismiss two judges from the Supreme Court.
Being dismissed are Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir and Judge Dr. Azmiralda Zahir. The case to dismiss Azmiralda and Mahaz from their positions was sent to the Judiciary Committee on May 5. The same day, the committee decided to further study the report on the case of dismissing the judges. The case was scheduled to proceed on May 6, but the Judiciary Committee meeting was canceled at the last minute. However, the People's Majlis has not disclosed a reason.
Regarding the matter, MP for Kendhoo constituency and a member of the Judiciary Committee, Mauroof Zakir, said that the last-minute cancellation of the scheduled committee meeting implies that JSC has made mistakes in handling the case.
