Privately-run television station RaajjeTV has been summoned to the Broadcasting Commission of Maldives.
RaajjeTV was summoned to Broadcom in connection with its coverage of the ongoing series of protests in the capital Malé City, led by youth demanding justice for 21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, who was found fallen from the ninth floor of a building in the capital city onto an adjacent warehouse in the early hours of April 18.
While RaajjeTV was summoned to Broadcom on Monday, the channel's Head of Programmes and Coordination, Amir Saleem, said that the letter summoning RaajjeTV to Broadcom was sent abruptly.
The letter read that they were to appear before Broadcom within one day.
Regarding the matter, Mohamed Nishan Ibrahim, a renowned lawyer who is part of the channel's legal team, said that the main reason RaajjeTV was summoned to Broadcom was in connection with the ongoing series of youth protests in Malé City. He stated that it was to question them regarding Broadcom's concerns about airing scenes from the youth protests, to the public.
Nishan said that the letter addressed to RaajjeTV by Broadcom did not clarify this at all, and that they have requested Broadcom for additional time to respond clearly in connection with the matter.
