A Maldivian man in custody at the Kulhudhuffushi Custodial in Haa Dhaal atoll, has attempted suicide.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) issued a statement regarding the suicide attempt on Friday, noting that the inmate was being held in Kulhudhuffushi Police Custodial.
The man is to have attempted to kill himself at around 09:12pm on April 4.
The police institution also revealed that he is currently receiving treatment at Kulhudhuffushi Hospital.
MPS has said that the person was taken into police custody on April 2 in connection with a case of causing damage to household property and creating unrest while intoxicated. The statement goes on to read that he is a 34-year-old Maldivian man.
They have stated that necessary measures have been taken in connection with the incident, and that the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and the National Integrity Commission have been informed about the incident. The police statement goes on to highlight that it has been decided to send a Major Crime Investigation team to Kulhudhuffushi to investigate the incident.
The police institution has said that an investigation into how the incident occurred is being carried out with special priority by the Police Professional Standards Command.
