The allegations involve attempts to influence the vote of no-confidence in the opposition’s favour on 27th March
Faris Maumoon denied the charges and said the investigation would not yield any results
The police had also forwarded charges over failure to pay an outstanding debt to the state for prosecution against Faris

The police are investigating Faris Maumoon on allegations of bribery and influencing voters, he said after attending the police questioning on Monday.

Faris is being investigated for attempting to bribe parliamentarians in order to influence the vote of no-confidence in the opposition’s favour on 27th March.

Prosecutors are pursuing similar charges against Faris’ opposition partner Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim.

Faris said after Monday’s summon that he does not believe the police’s investigation would yield any results and denied all charges.

The police have already searched the homes of two individuals in the parliamentarian’s employment.

The police had also forwarded charges over failure to pay an outstanding debt to the state for prosecution against Faris.

Though officers have not revealed any further details about the case nor are the nature of said expense clear, RaajjeMV understands that it was an expense made by the president’s residence at the time, and one that officers believe MP Faris carries responsibility for it.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Faris’ father, has expressly removed Faris from culpability and publicly stated that his son cannot be held accountable for any damages or penalty over the matter.
