Maldivian arrested in Sri Lanka for alleged terrorism plot

Sri Lankan police have revealed that a Maldivian is included among the six people arrested on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack at Arugam Bay, a popular tourist destination.
Deputy Inspector General of Police and police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa confirmed to Sri Lankan media that a Maldivian was among those arrested.
Sri Lankan police have not disclosed details of the arrested Maldivian.
The police spokesperson said on Monday that a Maldivian citizen had been arrested and that the suspects were being questioned in custody.
The Terrorism Investigation Division told Colombo Magistrate's Court on Monday that the six arrested individuals are suspected of being involved in planning an attack within the country targeting tourist areas, under the orders of foreign terrorist organizations.
The investigating authorities further stated in court that the suspects have been detained for a period of 90 days on the order of the Defence Minister, and that they were arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
After reviewing the details and special report submitted by the Terrorism Investigation Division, the Additional Magistrate said on Monday that the court has been instructed to regularly submit information on the progress of the investigation, and that it has been filed in the court record that the investigation is ongoing.
