The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that they are working to solve the parking issues in the congested capital Malé City and that parking at street corners contributes immensely to the increased risk of accidents.

This was revealed by Sub-Inspector of Police Hussain Aslah, while providing details on the ongoing efforts to establish road safety and security, on RaajjeTV’s ‘Fala Surukhee’ programme.

The sub-inspector stated that the parking issue is a massive issue and that work to solve this issue is always ongoing.

Highlighting that land has been allocated in Hulhumalé to solve issues related to parking, the sub-inspector said that vehicles from both Hulhumalé and Malé are being taken there. He also said that getting temporary parking spaces would be a significant solution.

Shedding light on the increase in road accidents of recent, the sub-inspector stated that parking at street corners is one of the reasons for accidents and that members of the public need to be aware of this.

He also said that illegal parking causes many challenges and even in emergency situations, vehicles like ambulances face many obstacles in accessing roads.

The police said that arranging several areas for temporary parking is an additional boost to the ongoing work to make the capital city's roads safer.

The area designated for parking four-wheeled vehicles in Hulhumalé is the land in front of Hulhumalé Cemetery Mosque.

Of this 90,000 square foot land, 50,000 square feet have been allocated for four-wheeled vehicles like taxis.

An area of 40,000 square feet has been allocated for keeping vehicles that are towed, for illegal parking on Hulhumalé roads.

Further, a vacant land in Hulhumalé Phase II, adjacent to the MACL flats has been arranged to allow time for registration and other matters for vehicles being used illegally, to park.
