The Elections Commission of Maldives (EC) has revealed that a little over 10,000 individuals were re-registered to cast their ballots in the fast-approaching parliamentary elections, by the deadline.
EC opened the opportunity window to re-register for the People’s Majlis polls on March 10. The application window closed at 3pm, March 16.
The commission revealed that by the time the deadline approached, a total of 11,169 individuals had applied to re-register, out of which, only 10,028 applications were accepted, and re-registered.
The remaining 1,141 applications were rejected.
EC on Saturday revealed that by March 15, the highest number of re-registrations abroad was recorded from Malaysia. EC revealed that 101 had re-registered to vote in Trivandrum, India, 583 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 276 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 13 in Bangkok, Thailand, 76 in London, United Kingdom, and 24 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
EC delayed the parliamentary polls of 2024 to April, after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ratified the fifth amendment to the General Elections Act on February 29.
The People’s Majlis elections were previously slated for 17 March 2024, which falls within the first week of the fasting month of Ramadan. The elections will now be held on 21 April 2024.
